(Poetry is "Ahnberg" typestyle  by MillaN)

Making up new rules to poetry, I thought I'd add a designer's
visual edge in conveying thoughts and inspirations.

Do you think it is foolish to Risk,

or foolish of the one who risks You?

Who is the Greater fool?

The one Who feels the greater Loss?

or the one that doesn’t know what they Lost?

Function without Design, is operation without style.
Design without Function, is useless eye candy.
Brains without Beauty, is missing appeal.
Beauty without brains is entertaining but lacking substance.
Substance without Surface, is distant
Surface without Substance, is lacking Depth
Action without Focus, is blunder.
Focus without Action, is unaccomplishing.

Talent without Education, is limited.
Education without Talent, has no Voice.
Voice without Appeal, is not effective.
Appeal without Voice, is unheard.
Gain without care for another, is loss.

"I always felt poetry was boring, just a smear of words that was fluffy, non-comprehendible, and no pictures to describe anything. I wanted to bring fun and interest to yet another realm of monotony."
Ruth Collis

This "Picture Poetry" where type-shapes form just as much interest as the words around them, is the idea behind making poetry fun for me, and becomes more than just writing words. Each typeface has a personality that can be used descriptively. Don't expect search engines to recognize this though.

Definition of Picture Poetry:
Using literary elements of words, letters, punctuation, or typestyles with personality to convey a visual form. It is also taking a repetitive block of words & making it easier to read or look at. It's breaking up complexity into a digestible form. It's like playing a game with words.

Uses of "picture poetry":

  • What's neat about this Designer Poetry, is that short little sayings can be made to convey an idea, or small picture without having to think of a lot to write. Though one can get deep & involved, this still provides a quick way to get to the point.

  • It's short, quick, & not the usual.

I got in a disagreement with my mechanic over function vs. beauty in a car (12-8-03). He told me to get in and drive the new 2004 Mustang, not just look at it. Well, I became greatly annoyed that he would even think of buying a car that may not "look" just as good as it performed.

You have to have an appeal for both sides of beauty & function. One should not be suckered into awesome machinery that may not have the same appeal in design.

Same principle of outer worth should not be ignored for only inner worth, nor vice versa. Both realms should signify and tell about each other in unison, and as a whole. One should not be greater than the other.

What started this idea, was looking up fun typestyles. I found it made the wording on this website more interesting & broke up longer volumes of words making it easier to read. At the same time, it added written substance of more than just art.

Beware:

Every webpage has two types of visitors: Human visitors and search engines crawler bots (spiders) to list your page (for people to look up) according to ranking for your page's keyword or theme. Search engines cannot read pictures, yet you might want the engines to find you and ultimately your human visitor friends with your poetry content.

If the majority of word content is saved in picture form (with this kind of Picture Poetry), you'll never be found on the web. So if you've thought of making the font color light or white (totally invisible), so human visitors will see mostly your worded picture designs, the search engines may confuse this for cloaking, which is a deceptive practice used by some webmasters to make more keywords visible to the engines only for better listing placement, but yet not offer real content to what the human visitors are looking for. So as a result, the search engines may reject a site from their listings that use this practice, just because it comes too close to deception. Then it is hell recovering your good name again.

So it is a skill in using Picture Poetry on a webpage. Words need to be readable by the Search Engines, and humans as well. More than likely, if you put up enough "written" poetry content, that will more than make up for any other "picture" poetry type forms.
